AI Made Delegation EasyStructure Is Still the SkillAI didn't make you faster. It made you stop having to slow down, and that is the more dangerous gift. For most of working history, planning was involuntary. Doing anything, hiring a contractor, drafting a proposal, building a model, took long enough that you had time to think before you were far enough in to regret it. The friction wasn't a design choice. It was just what the world cost. Slowness enforced discipline nobody had to choose on purpose. AI collapses that friction. An idea can become a draft, a plan, a working prototype, a full campaign, in the time it used to take to schedule the kickoff meeting. The need for a plan didn't go away. The thing that used to force one into existence did. Planning is no longer a byproduct of how slow things are. It has to be a decision now. That creates a fork, and most people don't notice they're standing at it. One path: build the structure first, decide what the work is actually for, then delegate deliberately inside that frame. This is close to what I've called being a Conductor rather than an Auditor. The Conductor holds the why, the context, the constraints, the actual goal, and directs AI to explore the how. The Auditor skips straight to checking whether the output looks right, because producing output got so easy that producing it started to feel like the whole job. The other path is more tempting right now, because it feels like progress. Skip the planning, because the tool lets you skip it. Generate the deck, the code, the campaign, the report, and figure out what it's actually for later. It moves. It looks like momentum. It is often a house of cards: a lot of visible activity with nothing underneath it, impressive right up until someone asks a question and there's no structure there to answer it. This isn't a purity argument for doing things the slow way on principle. It's a competence argument, and there's data behind it. A recent study comparing human and AI-agent workflows across several skill domains found that using AI deliberately, as a tool for one specific step inside a human-directed process, improved efficiency by roughly a quarter. Handing an entire task off wholesale did the opposite: efficiency dropped by nearly eighteen percent, because the time saved generating the output was spent twice over verifying and fixing it. The house of cards isn't just fragile. It's frequently slower than building the thing properly the first time. So the skill worth building right now isn't "using AI." That's table stakes. Everyone has the tool. The skill is planning and structuring the environment the delegation happens inside: deciding what the work actually needs to accomplish, what constraints are non-negotiable, what "done" means, before any instruction goes out, not after the output comes back and you're reverse-engineering a justification for it. The people who get this right will look, from the outside, indistinguishable from everyone else moving fast. The difference won't show up this quarter. It shows up when the thing built on sand needs to hold weight it was never planned for, and the thing built on structure just does. AI didn't take the baton out of anyone's hand. It just made it a lot easier to forget you're still holding it. |
